… in case pple are wondering are about the silence, it’s far from that. All you have to do is look at the comments thread – there is a firestorm, peeps!
(latest update to the above: I have disabled some of the comments being allowed on my AWARE blog posts. Because really, while I enjoy all the verbal jousting, it really is (as someone noted) becoming a circus. All I did was air my personal views on the subject and it’s getting out of hand; people are insulting each other in the midst of all this. time to stop. and before some people think that it’s out of fear of having to ‘justify’ my position, it’s not – my views on the whole AWARE saga is clear, and I have said all I need to say ad nauseum. Time to give it a break.)
That said, D-day looms. T minus approximately 39 hours. (and yes they moved the venue again [now suntec city convention centre] because the police supposedly advised the S’pore Expo about the possibility of violence. Hah. How likely is violence, you tell me? So the possibility that Suntec City management might be advised of the same thing is there, too.)
A friend sent me this tasty bit of info, taken from the blog http://wayangparty.com/?p=8542:
EXPOSED: AWARE EGM venue moved to EXPO, next to “Transformation Conference 2009″ co-organized by COOS and 40 other Churches
Coincidence? I think NOT.
In case my last post sounded like a rant (which is was in a way), one should read Alan John’s article in the ST Review page (pg A26) today (23.4.09) which sums up all my misgivings in relation to this new AWARE ExCo:
- the lack of transparency in their motives: they have not articulated their directions, and they shun the opportunity to state these intentions. I dunno about you, but if I were a new president of a prominent women’s association and if I am convinced that I had the chops to take on the task, I would be announcing it loud and proud;
- the almost complete homogenity in the new Exco: the women all from a similar background [professional working women], and are all from the same race [Chinese] (as far as the photos tell). AND they have no grassroots experience in helping in AWARE – or any other women’s issues.
- their glaring reluctance to speak about their religious affiliations (which is increasingly telling about their motives), and how they claim that these affiliations are not relevant in the current case. (Please. We’re not stupid, even if you think we are. No one can successfully divorce their upbringing – which includes religious influences – from the way they view things.) It’s also interesting to note that Mr John’s Google search of this new Exco turned up information about their letters to the media voicing their violent opposition to homosexuality.
I do not want to plagiarise Mr John’s article, because he has done an excellent job distilling all the misgivings about AWARE’s new ExCo.
PLEASE READ THE ARTICLE.
Incidentally, this whole episode just confirms my view about organised religion and how twisted some of these people can be. I went to a Christian school for 10 yrs of my life, and also attended church when i was in Melbourne. and while most of the Christians I met were good people, this bunch in the new Exco seem militant, intolerant, secretive. All of which, I believe, go against any and all religious tenets, be they Christian, Muslim, Hindu et cetera.
(on a side note, am down with a throat infection and various other things associated with it. ugh.)
